A woman is like a flower: there are layers to explore and different angles from which to pluck. She is a trusted confident to her best friend; She is an impassioned creator to her colleagues; She is a a tender inamorata to her sweetheart; She will forever be “Mommy’s Little Girl” to her proud mother. Indisputably so, these are relationships to be nurtured, honored and celebrated. We can all appreciate the notion that sometimes life gets in the way and blinds us from these small victories. Luckily, someone long ago was clever enough to carve out a few commemorative days on the almighty calendar. Yes, dear friends, Mother’s Day crawls quickly upon us!
As it was originally conceived, Mother’s Day was intended as a day to pay homage to mothers who has lost their sons during the Civil War. While the seed was planted as far back as 1868 by a woman named Ann Jarvis, her success at a local level did not truly take root until 1908 when her daughter, Anna Marie Jarvis, following in her mother’s footsteps, campaigned for the proclamation of a U.S. national holiday. On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the very first national Mother’s Day as a day for citizens to raise their flags in honor of mothers who had lost their sons. Then, in 1934, President Franklin Roosevelt officiated Mother’s Day as an annual, U.S. holiday.
It was the lucky carnation that was first plucked as the gift of choice. In 1908, Anna Marie Jarvis had 500 carnations delivered to an Episcopalian Church in West Virginia where her mother had once taught Sunday school. As the years rolled on, however, and the holiday became more deeply ingrained in the thread of the American public, sons and daughters and lovers and friends have continued to up the ante…
Today, Ovando would love to help you celebrate mom with a bespoke arrangement that she’ll never forget. Yes, carnations are gorgeous, but we think mom deserves a more inspired treat!
